2nd City Chorus was formed and chartered by the Barbershop Harmony Society in September of 1996. In the thirteen years of performing, the chorus has sung under the musical direction of four very fine musical leaders. Joseph Caulkins was the founding director and was followed in the fall of 2000 by Jeffrey Lathom, and then in 2002 by George Gipp. Ironically, all three of these men now live in Florida. In 2004 the choral directing duties were handed over to Peter Hansen, who continued to direct 2nd City through 2008. Chours member Terry McDivitt handled the directing duties during the year 2009, and beginning in January 2010, 2nd City Chorus welcomed the talents of new Musical Director Joe Tomecek (Click here to learn more about Joe). It is a testament to the dedication of singing and performing at a high level of excellence that 2nd City Chorus has chosen musical directors who have each individually made significant marks within the Barbershop Harmony Society.
2nd City Chorus has won numerous awards in its short history. In April of 1997, the chorus entered its first Barbershop contest, competing in the Illinois District Spring Chorus Contest. Not only did the chorus win the first place honor, but it did so by achieving a margin of over 100 points from the nearest competitor. In six of its district contests, 2nd City has finished in the Illinois District Top Five.
The local RAMI award as Rockford’s best classical choral group has been given to 2nd City Chorus on two occasions, and in August of 1999 the chorus was chosen to represent the state of Illinois at the “Buckeye Invitational”. The Columbus, Ohio event features Barbershop and Sweet Adeline choruses and quartets from across the country.
